Humanist Wedding Celebrant

Humanist Weddings with Emma Sides — HSE-Registered Legal Solemniser

I am one of Ireland’s original, best, and most experienced Humanist celebrants. My weddings are warm, unique, deeply personal, and professionally managed. All you have to do is show up, relax, and get married!

How your ceremony comes together

There’s no fixed script; the two of you choose every word spoken on the day. I’ll send you clear information about each part of the ceremony and go through it in detail with you. Simply pick the words that speak to you both, and I’ll do the rest. Most ceremonies include a welcome and introduction, a little about your story, words on love and marriage (plenty of romance with a dash of pragmatism), one or two ceremonial elements, poetry, the exchange of vows and rings, and the signing of the Register. All Humanist celebrants are HSE-regulated Legal Solemnisers, and we conduct weddings seven days a week.

Vows: write your own — or choose a favourite

I’ll be totally honest, most couples don’t write their own vows, and that’s perfectly fine. If you want to write them, I’m here to help (a few happy tears only add to the atmosphere!). Prefer not to? I have a thoughtful selection of ready-made vows you can adapt to suit yourselves.

Readings that feel like you

I’ve curated a wide collection of poems and readings over almost 20 years as a professional Humanist celebrant, from traditional to contemporary, from deeply romantic to delightfully funny. Most couples choose two or three pieces, often read by family and friends.

Ceremonial elements
(optional, meaningful, personal)

If you’d like to include one or two rituals, I’ll guide you with plenty of inspiration: handfasting, candle-lighting, sand ceremony, ring-warming, wine ceremony, time-capsule, rose ceremony, oathing stone, bread and salt, and more. I’m always open to new ideas and everything can be adapted. There are no rules; your ceremony is designed to suit your personalities.

Music to set the tone

Live music adds wonderful atmosphere and musicians can also play while guests are taking their seats. From string quartets to contemporary singers, classical guitar to traditional Irish music, harp to gospel choir, choose what suits your vibe. If recorded music works better, I’ll advise on timings and flow. I can also recommend musicians if you’re not sure where to begin.

Venues, timing & the legal bit

Ceremonies often take place in the hotel where your reception is held, but restaurants, art galleries, ruined churches, and iconic spaces like Dublin City Hall are all beautiful options. Indoor or outdoor is possible (outdoors must be within the grounds of a building that could host the ceremony if it rains).

Venues should generally be open to the public (private homes aren’t suitable). Most wedding ceremonies last about 25–30 minutes and include readings, a ceremonial element, and, of course, the exchange of vows and rings. As a Legal Solemniser, I ensure the Marriage Registration Form, yes, the bright green folder, is signed on the day.
